B. OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this program are to plan and organize a test program
to perform automotive aerodynamic testing of vehicle exterior components and
tn hapes including external and internal cooling system configurations. The test5>
will be supervised in a wind tunnel facility selected on a competitive compari-
son basis. The test rogram results will U D C D C valuated and organiz T5 mto an
illustrated and simplified handbook typ report which may be used by non-tech-
* - * • O P tyling personnel during the early phases of vehicle planning.
1. Study: The study phase objective will be to review and u ompar
available wind tunnel facilities, instrumentation techniques, models, etc. , and
compare for cost, accuracy, availability, etc. , and select a mutually suitable
site or sites and prepare a users agreement.
Existing wind tunnel facilitie u apable of testing 3/8 and full scale auto-
mobile models will be evaluated to determine availability, accuracy, cost, etc. ,
in order to select tunnel or tunnel tn tn uitable for aerodynamic testing. The
objective • r — 4 a tn tudy will be to select a tunnel or combination of tunnels fo
testing which can give the most accurate information required at the lowest
overall cost.
Instrumentation systems and techniques used by the various facilities will
be analyzed and evaluated as part of the total study.
2. Model Design: Existing models will be analyzed to determine the
most suitable way tn of modifying elements for quick change or segmented com-
ponents to reduce tunnel down time for model configuration changes.
