c. Communication System
The pit to driver communication system was checked out following
the Atlanta race where it was used in the Owens/Baker team car.
The system was delivered to Talladega for installation in the Owens/
Baker car. Mr. Owens did not install the radio for the race and commented that the
system did not work at Atlanta.
A Huntsville engineer was at the Atlanta race on his own time and was
asked by Mr. Owens and Mr. McDaniel to operate the pit radio. He reported noisy (but
understandable) reception from the car and that Baker responded to all instructions from
the pit radio.
3. Mobile Control Center
The Mobile Control Center was not used during April.
The scoring system was demonstrated to ABC Sports at Talladega and
returned to Huntsville.
Mr. C. Howard (Vice President Productions) was favorably impressed with
the system but said their budget would not stand the cost for the Talladega race. Mr.
Howard asked his people to summarize their remaining races and obtain a cost proposal
from Chrysler on scoring these races.
4• Special Systems Development
a. Driver Seat Suspension
The seat suspension system consisting oi a modified Bostrom Torsion
Bar suspension system has been built up with higher rate spr ings and a shock absorb*
with more control.
With modifications for shoulder belt attachment the seat will be ready
for track testing.
b. Vehicle Thermal Insulation
Investigations were begun to establish levels of outgassing of any toxic
fumes from foamed poly ether-urethane insulation.
