Funding problems cancelled the scheduled Darlington tests and car rebuild
was re-oriented to Daytona tests for the week of 11 May.
2. Instrumentation and Electronics Support
a. Test Support - Grand National Car
The Plymouth Engineering test car was fully instrumented for tests
conducted at Talladega 4, 5 and 6 April with the following measurements:
Suspension Displacement
Steering Wheel Position
Engine Speed
Yaw
Acceleration 3 axis
Oil Pressure
Carburetor Air Pressure
The measurement data was reduced for engineering analysis following
each days testing.
The Dodge Engineering test car was prepared at R. Nickels Engineering
for thex Proving Ground test run. Instrumentation was installed at Nickels Engineering
during car preparation and checked out at the Proving Ground on Saturday, 18 April for
tests scheduled on 19 April. The test run was rescheduled to 26 April due to weather
problems. The followin measurements were recorded for engineering analysis:
cC
Engine Speed
Propeller Shaft Torque
Wheel Speed
Yaw
Acceleration (longitudinal and vertical)
The propellor shaft torque was successfully recorded using lebowLL
rotating shaft torque sensor installed between a shortened propellor shaft and the rear
axle housing. Preliminary analysis of data indicated the measurement was successful.
b. Test Support - Drag Test Car
A drag race Barracuda was instrumented for tests at Cecil County
Dragway, Maryland, 13, 14 and 15 April. The following measurements were recorded
and data reduced immediately following tests:
