HUNTSVILLE CIRCUIT RACING TEST OPERATIONS

A. Summary o£ Accomplishments During February, 1970
The Dodge Daytona test vehicle was prepared as a back-up race car fo Hi
the Daytona 500 and then revised fo a track test at Atlanta.
The Mobile Control Center was utilized at Daytona February 3-22, 197 0,
and the scoring system successfully recorded the two 125 mile qualifying races--
the Permatex 300 and the 500 mile race.
The pit-to-driver communication system was installed and used in the
Owens/Baker vehicle in the 125 mile qualifying race and in the Daytona 500 with
only minor mechanical problems.
Subsystems improvements in instrumentation and measuring systems
continued to impr ove installation, c n ystem accuracy, and reliability.
A secondary instrumentation was built for limited instrumentation of a
Trans Am test car.
1. Test Vehicle Operations
The Dodge test vehicle was prepared as a possible back-up race
car for the Daytona 500 mile race by updating sheet metal and magma glowing
required areas. Suspension components were changed and a standard Nickels
Engineering engine installed.
Following Daytona qualifications, the test vehicle began preparations
for Atlanta track tests. Three carburetor air inlet duct configurations were
prepared, including various scoops for cowl area, a front area inlet duct, and
a fender area inlet.
Instrumentation and Electronics Support

a. Test Support
The Lockheed magnetic tape recorder was sent to Lockheed
(We st Coast) for installation of 5 turn calibration potentiometers (replacing 1/2 pots)
to improve calib ation accur acy and reduce vibration induced drift in calibration
during vehicle testing.
