3. Phase II - Test Planning, Model Design and Construction
Utilizing the knowledge gained during Phase I, the test program will be
formulated. Model design will also begin since test parameters will have been established.
During model design, whether it be full-scale, quarter-scale, or three-eight-scale,
functional operation will be of prime concern. Parametric investigations, such as these
tests, require many model changes. Tunnel occupancy charge occurs whether tests are
being conducted or not. Therefore, by proper design of the model, rapid and varied model
changes can be made saving many dollars in tunnel costs. This factor gains importance in
the larger tunnels where occupancy charges can run up to $800.00 per hour. CHO has the
experience and capability to perform this design function.
Accurate wind tunnel data can be obtained only when proper scaling has been
applied to the model. As born out in References 4 through 8, some parameters have no
significance (i.e., rotating wheels), while others make tremendous differences (i.e., under
body detailing, radiator simulation). Every effort will be made during model design to
insure that all significant scaling parameters are adequately simulated. Where warranted,
provisions will be made on or in the model to allow individual investigations to be conducted
during testing of the effect of scaling on the parameter in question.
Particular attention will be given to the engine compartment since investi
gations will be made of the internal flow phenomena. The design will allow various com
partment shapes and will provide for simulating cooling fan rotation.
Although CHO possesses the capability to manufacture the model, outside
bids will be received to insure a competitive price for models. For sectionalized models
specifically, Micro Craft in Tullahoma, Tennessee, fifty miles northeast of Huntsville,
Alabama, who specialize in wind tunnel model manufacturing, will be invited to bid. In
the past they have proven their capability in model making to CHO, being superior to other
sources. Close scrutiny will be maintained by CHO aerodynamic personnel during the
manufacturing phase to insure adequate detailing of parts.
A pre-test report similar to Reference 10 will be prepared during this phase
which will contain the test plan, model details including stress analysis and rough estimates
of aerodynamic loads and pressures to be expected. At the conclusion of this work, an
informal meeting with CEO personnel will be conducted to review the progress to date and
to incorporate any last minute test changes.
4. Phase III - Test Conduction, Data Reduction and Analysis and Report
Publication
When the model scale to be tested has been mutually agreed upon (during
Phase I), immediate selection of a test facility will be made and CHO will arrange for test
time. Pre-test meetings with the tunnel personnel will be conducted to resolve any difficult
areas and to assure complete understanding and mutual agreement on all test plans.
