Special Performance Vehicle Work Summary
The following tasks are being performed, have been proposed via IPA, or have been
discussed for future efforts in support of the race car program.
I. COMPLETED PROGRAM TASKS
A. Wind Tunnel Testing of 3/8 Scale Model Dodge Charger Daytona
This program involved wind tunnel testing of a 3/8 scale model of the Dodge
Charger Daytona prior to its mid year introduction. A long pointed front end extension
was introduced to reduce drag and front end lift. A horizontal stabilizer was added to
the rear with vertical fins to increase rear wheel loading and achieve a closer CG to
CP relationship.
B. Special Performance Vehicle Communication System
A communication system was developed using state-of-the-art developments
in commercial EM radio, ballistic (bone) microphones, and acoustic insulation to allow
successful communication between a high speed race car driver and the car pit area.
The system has been successfully tested at high speeds on the Chelsea Track, the Dayton -
Speedway, Talladega Speedway, and Charlotte Speedway.
C. Mobile Control Center and Race Scoring System
Utilizing a Dodge Motor Home as a motorized base for movement to track
side, a computerized race car lap scoring system has been developed.
The basic system obtains manual electrical inputs from observer controlled
push buttons as each car completes a lap and/or a pit stop. A CE-16 computer is pro
grammed to accept these inputs and determine 15 car positions and time difference from
lead car. The information is printed out each lap for display purposes. The system
recognizes and denotes: green flag, caution flag, red flag, and checkered flag; also pace
car position in car field, race time, number of laps raced, race length, and nominal lap
times.
Races have been successfully scored at Darlington and Talladega.
