INTRODUCTION
In recent years* the resemblance of the ’’stock” cars currently seen on the
NASCAR C*rand National Circuit to their oroduction counterparts has diminishe
The current "Daytona 5>00" and Ford "T.alledega" signaled the breakthrough in
racing limited production^ specially built, vehicles. With this limited
production concept in mind^ the.most recent tunnel tests were aimed at reduc H- U
vehicle drag and improving handling without concern'for maintaining a
particular image or appearance^ ie. - functional and performance considerati ons
were to supercede any aesthetic or styling considerations if so required.
Because the rent end of the current "Daytona. pOO" was still far from an
optimum even though improved over a stock Charger, the primary focus of the
tists was on front end improvement through streamlining and "drooping". It
as felt that considerable drag and front end lift reductions could be achieved
in this area* In addition^ a cursory look at the windshield and "A" post
area was made to ascertain what benefits could be gained in this region.
Rear deck airfoils and vertical stabilizers x?ere also studied to gain insight on ways
to improve the "draftability" of the car and/or improve the handling in corners.
The ultimate goal in such studies is to increase the average vehicle speed by
increasing the speeds through the corners,, Results of these tests are now
being evaluated and will be presented early in May.
