for driver familiarization and checkout. Drivers Bobby Allison, Chanlies

Glolzbach, James Hylton and Paul Goldsmith took turns in the car with a driver

on the pit radio. All drivers were enthusiastic about the system although the

noise to signal ratio from the car was still high, at the lower speeds (6000 rpm
                                                                                                     -f-h<
maximum) communication was fair. The helmet fit was poor for4drivers

and pointed out the fact that custom fit/lis absolutely necessary.

All instrumentation functioned well except the event marker and front wheel

C T peed. An excessive amount of electronic noise on magnetic tape playback interferred

with data analysis, however, Mr. H. R. Killen was able to build a filter and averaging

circuit which cured the playback problem.

The Charger 500 was used for track testing the NACA submerged inlet (CHO

design interpretation from a NACA report) and various cowl inlet scoops. The tests

indicated small differences in various configurations of cowl scoops and a definite

degradation with the NACA inlet with a nose extension to simulate the Charger Daytona

                aerodynamic flow.
