Trip Report to Daytona, Florida, November 24 - 28, 1968
The writer and L. Shafer drove to Daytona Beach, Florida, to meet with
Lo Rathgeb and the Chrysler Special Performance Group to participate in competition
f/ireC
car testing and evaluate -several portable magnetic tape recorders in the race track
environment.
Monday and Monday night were spent preparing the vehicle for testing and
installation of a universal mounting fixture in the right side passenger area which
would accept each of the recorders and allow mounting for evaluation in three critical
planes (roll, pitch, and yaw). It was expected that some recorders would be succept-
able to the high angular acceleration rates encountered on the track which would vary
tape speed due to rotational component inertias or affect capstone performance
characteristics.
Mr. Schafer prepared a microphone and a prefabricated pre amp for measure
ment of acoustic frequencies and levels inside the car during track tests to be used in
election of microphones and earphones for the proposed pit to driver communication
system.
Tuesday morning the Ampex Model ’’S ^7 CQ tape recorder, which was
carried from Huntsville, was installed and AC power was picked off the inverter being
carried in the vehicle trunk to operate a Brush Model 220 pen recorder being used for
vehicle measurements. Since the main purpose in our test was to evaluate the recorder,
no measurements were connected, instead only a constant voltage was applied so that
distortions could be viewed upon replay on an oscilloscopefcter. Due to time limitations,
