AXIS SYSTEM AND NOMENCLATURE - Figure 1 presents the axis system
utilized in this investigation. The axis system is a standard, air
craft based, body oriented system of orthogonal coordinates. Positive
lift is vertically upward, positive axial force is rearward and positive
side force is to the left (Driver' view). The lift and side force data
presented in this work are presented as front axle and rear axle coeffi-
n ients rather than total vehicle lift or side force coefficients and
yawing and pitching moment coefficients. This mode of presentation is
thought to be more applicable to automotive work than the classical six
component data presentation at a reference point used in aircraft
studies.
