Results of Final Daytona Test of 1968-1/2 Race Car
Discussion (cont1d)
The 1968-1/2 Plymouth, driven by Darel Dieringer, was at. the
track for a Goodyear tire test, and was afterwards run to work out
the suspension set-up required to reduce the front wheel travel to
eliminate the fender to tire interference that has been experienced
on the 1968-1/2 race cars. This car continued to run at speeds of
184 mph using the Goodycar February tire, but obtained this speed
with worn tires, where in the previous test this speed was obtained
with new tires. This may be due either to greater driver familiarity
with the car or to improvements in handling with the new suspension
set-up. During the Goodyear test this car lapped at about 185.5 mph
with the Goodyear July 4 tire.
As a result of the testing of the various 1968-1/2 race cars
at Daytona as covered in this letter and the previous ones of May 22,
1968 and June 5, 1968 it appears that both the Plymouth and Charger
1968-1/2 race cars are significantly faster than in February, with
the Charger 1.5 to 2.5 mph faster than the Plymouth. It seems likely
that in the July 4 race these 1968-1/2 cars should be competitive
with the Ford and Mercury race cars, if Ford has not made any major
changes since February.
