was being rebuilt at Nichels Engineering. Parts were then ordered to update the car (046)
to a Daytona as a back up car for January 1970 Talladega testing.

The truck test car transport vehicle was repaired and serviced in preparation for
               trip to Riverside.

The mechanics were off approximately a week and one half for relocation to
               Huntsville and vacations.

                       II. Instrumentation Support

Checkout and calibration of all measurements and support equipment includ
ing the recorder was begun. The vehicle mounted electronics power supplies and signal
conditioning equipment was redesigned and repackaging begun. All equipment except
transducers and cabling can now be installed in a centrally located area.

Additional transducers were ordered to allow basic instrumentation of the
back up test vehicle except for recorders and signal conditioning equipment.

Fabrication of a mobile truck mounted instrumentation shop was begun to
allow transportation of equipment and provide a self-contained work area at remote test
               sites.

The improved pit to driver system was tested in a vehicle during time tests
at the College Station Texas track. Transmission from pit to driver was satisfactory.
However, helmet fit problems on the driver forced relocation of some helmet mounted
components. Problems arose with driver to pit communication at speed due to high
ambient noise level leaking to the helmet mounted microphone. The drivers personal
helmet has been reworked to accommodate an acoustic shield around microphone and
larger earphones installed to improve volume level and quality in the helmet.

                      HI. Mobile Control Center

The motor home was serviced and repaired in preparation for the Texas
race December 7, and Riverside tests December 15-20. A permanent platform was
fabricated for the roof and a folding section guard rail installed for safety purposes.

The borrowed high speed printer was interfaced with the computer and
practice races performed on the scoring system to test speed and versatility. The
present teletypewriter has a capacity of 10 characters per second. By comparison,
the 80 column high speed printer can print 1000 characters per second. A 15 car
position field of lap information is printed in 1.4 seconds.
