JUNE, 1970 _____________________
A• Summary of Accomplishments JJur ing June 1970
A Drag car test was supported with an instrumentation package for test con-
ducted at the Detroit Dragway 16 - 19 June 1970.
The Plymouth test car 097 < p o c o rebuilt after the Daytona engine tests and
prepared for automatic transmission testing at Huntsville. The vehicle was tested
on a simulated Riverside course at the old Huntsville Airport, 24 June 1970.
Test Vehicle Operations
Following engine tests conducted in late May at Daytona the Plymouth test
car 097 was prepared for testing an experimental automatic transmission.
Critical components were magnafluxed and the following changes and
modifications were made to prepare for testing:
Experimental engine EX 166 was removed and shipped to Engineer-
ing for analv c n tn
Nickels Engineering Q op ine NH 895 installed.
Transmission cooler and transmission oil filter installed.
Floor pan reworked to accept automatic shifter box.
Brake cooling ducts installed in front.
Road race (Riverside set up) suspension changes made.
Wednesday, 24 June, the vehicle was tested on a simulated road course at
Huntsville. The transmission performed well for several runs but indicated high trans
mission oil temperature. Removal of filter from cooler line appeared to help the tem
perature problem but the transmission failed the oil pump drive gear after 13 laps which
concluded test activities.
The transmission was removed, inspected and returned to B&M for rebuild.
