NOW—A Plush British Grand Tourer
With V8 power, Triumph takes a leap into the
Mercedes-Benz, B.M.W., and Lancia class
By DAVID SCOTT / PS European Editor
T riumph Stag is Britain’s first mass-production Grand
Touring car, built to sell at around $5,500. That’s a dis
count-store price for a sleek Italian-styled four-seater
with all-independent suspension and a quiet but powerful
V8 engine of advanced design. I drove this car on the no
speed-limit roads of Belgium and was greatly impressed.
It went from standstill to 100 mph in just half a minute.
The suspension worked wonders to keep the car steady, A mass of instruments is grouped in front of the driver, and

in Belgium. I liked the precise power steering, which has
good road feel. The steering wheel is adjustable for both
height and rake. Body-contoured front seats are fully
reclining, have adjustments for height and tilt. The power
brakes were great, and slow the car sharply, but without
harshness, when the foot goes down hard. The Stag meets
all U. S. federal safety standards.
Convertible version has a three-point rollover bar that also stiffens
the body. Large doors give easy entry to back seat.
