Application
The urethane foam is applied in its raw form as a 50/50 liquid mix with
special Binks liquid/liquid mix equipment. The technique is similar to paint spray
ing. The liquid is sprayed on the surface and immediately foams and becomes rigid
within five seconds.
The areas protected include engine firewall area under car back to
kick up area of floor pan. Inside the car firewall and floor area rearward to torque
box including oil tank area bulk head are covered.
Application is made in thicknesses of one inch or more to fill in cracks,
voids,-etc. Since material foams out perpendicular to surfaces it tends to exaggerate
irregular surfaces and is trimmed with sharp knife for appearance.
After trimming the insulated area is painted with a white fire resistant
paint. The paint used is manufactured by Albi Manufacturing Company, code no.
107A White. Two coats of paint are applied either spray or brush. This paint
serves several purposes:
1. Seals areas trimmed and prevents chaffing or abrasion of exposed
foam.
White coat reflects radiant heat and aids.appearance.
Provides added fire protection to foam (prevents burning).
General Characteristic
The urethane foam appears to resist general track type abrasion from
gravel, etc., and adds strength to areas sprayed.
The foam is closed cell and does not absorb water, oil, gas, etc. , and
is easy to clean.
Removal can only be performed by scraping or previously mentioned
masking.
The foam meets an ASTM non-burning specification. It will burn slowly
(without paint) in presence of flame but quits when flame or fuel source is removed.
It forms a protective char outside layer which protects remaining foam.
The exhaust pipes are strapped against the foam which will char and
form a cradle for the pipes.
