JOE WEATHERLY MUSEUM
The Joe Weatherly Stock Car Museum at
Darlington Raceway is South Carolina's newest
tourist attraction.
The immaculate museum, completed in 1965,
is the world's only authentic stock car racing
museum.
Named after one of the sport's all-time stars,
the late Joe Weatherly, the museum houses
some of the most famous stock cars in history,
including the 1950 Plymouth Johnny Mantz
drove to victory in the inaugural Southern 500,
the fabulous Hudson Hornet made famous by
Herb Thomas, the 1963 Chevrolet Junior John­
son made so popular and the last car to be
driven in competition by the late, great Glenn
(Fireball) Roberts.
Elegantly constructed it has attracted more
than two million visitors since opening in 1965.
Admission is free and is open every day during
the summer. Open weekdays, closed on Saturday
and open Sunday afternoons during the winter.
Vacationers at South Carolina's Grand Strand
Coastal area annually flock to the museum dur­
ing the summer. Only 90 minutes away.
For souvenir hunters, the Museum houses the
world's largest racing souvenir collection.
THE REBEL 400
The exciting Rebel 400 at Darlington Race­
way, held each May, is the nation's second old­
est super speedway event.

The race, a 300-mile event for stock car con­
vertibles in 1957, was lengthened to 400 miles
in 1966 at the world's oldest super speedway.
The 291-lap race for Grand National stock

cars has been dominated by such stock car rac­
ing super stars as the late Glenn (Fireball)
Roberts, Junior Johnson, Fred Lorenzen and the the thirst slaker
late Joe Weatherly. The sport's all-time super
star, Richard Petty, will be seeking his third
consecutive Rebel 400 victory in 1968.
The Rebel 400 is generally regarded as the
official return of Spring to the South and the
Saturday affair is a “must" on the southern
sports scene. Thirty-six powerful machines start
this event in rows of two's.
Fittingly, the Rebel 400 at Darlington Race­
way earned a classic spot in history when Petty
won the 1967 event for his 55th career victory.
Servicemen's discount tickets are available to
this race and the Boy Scouts of America are
also honored by special admission.
