The power supply and transducer signal equipment are custom built for
the system selected to run off 12 volt DC power and convert to required levels
for individual transducers and amplifiers plus power to operate a recorder.
The recorder carried in the vehicle is a seven channel, magnetic tape
recorder capable of operation under the severe track conditions. Obviously
we cannot measure more than seven parameters on each run without commu
tation which increases expense and complicates data reduction.
The data reduction is performed by playback from the recorder to a pen
recorder which provides a hard permanent copy for engineering analysis.
The calibration system is designed to enable accurate field calibration
of the complete system as installed tn vehicle. This is a custom system to
meet measurement requirements.
The cost breakdown for this system is estimated as follows for planning
purposes:
Vehicle Recording System $ 13,500
Data Reduction Recorder 9,500
Signal Conditioning & Power Supply 30,000
Calibration System 5,000
Fabrication 21,000
Installation and Check Out 5,500
Travel 2,000
Total $ 86,500
This approximate price would provide a complete system checked out
and ready to operate with a functional check at a race track during a regular
test.
Our experience has shown that the most difficult problem is obtaining
reliable system operation during a test when frequent mechanical changes are
occurring and system components are damaged. We naturally try to design a
system as trouble free as practical and protect transducers and cabling within
reason and weight limits.
