Trip Report, to All American Racers, Santa Anna, California, For Instrumentation
of Trans/Am Barracuda
During the week ending 28 February 1970, the writer prepared an instru
mentation system for use on an AAR Trans/Am Barracuda to be tested at Riverside
International Raceway. On 5 March 1970, the writer departed Huntsville for AAR
Inc., in Santa Anna, California, to install the instrumentation system and operate
this equipment during the Riverside test.
The following measurements were included in the proposed instrumentation
system:
H Engine RPM
M Propeller Shaft RPM
W Right and Left Front Suspension Displacement
Yaw
Longitudinal Acceleration
Lateral Acceleration
7. Steering Wheel Position
The instrumentation system was installed on the race car on 6, 7, and 8
March in preparation for testing scheduled 9 March 1970. Several modifications
were necessary due to design differences in the Trans/Am car as compared to
Grand National Cars. The writer was unable to install the front wheel suspension
displacement transducers due to severe space limitations. The vehicle battery was
found to be inadequate for the instrumentation systems power requirements and an
additional battery had to be installed in the trunk area.
On Sunday, 8 March, it was reported that the race car’s engine had failed
during dynamometer testing. This failure postponed the car testing until the coming
weekend.
While waiting for engine repair (9-12 March), the writer attempted again to
install the front suspension displacement transducers; however, the effort was
abandoned due to space and equipment (transducer) limitations. Dueing this time
the writer also made modifications to the instrumentation system for easier and
more reliable operation. The race car was sent out to be painted during this time.
