SPOOL MOUNT INSTALLATION IN 69 CHARGER CAR 093

Upon receipt of Nichels pre-fabricated spool motor mount an attempt was made
to install horse collar and mounts in car. Unless extensive modification was done to
the welded in K member there was no way to use supplied pieces as a unit. After a
very brief technical conversation with our fearless gun toting and knife sharpening
leader, Mr. L. Rathgeb, it was decided to use one of the original horse collars. So
for whoever has to make one of these darn things, here goes ....

                      1. Make a fixture to locate engine position side to side (lateral) and up and
down (vertical). The one shown in picture #1 works fine. Locate fore and aft with
              transmission motor in place.

                      2. Measure the thickness of a standard motor mount insulator and the thick
ness of the new spool mount assembly. The difference in height is what has to be re
moved from the horse shoe. The removed piece is cut out starting 1" from lower
mounting pad on horse shoe. Reweld the pieces back to gether. Add a l/8 x 1” strip
across front face of lower mounting pad to form a box section. Locate and drill lower
pad for studs on spool mount bracket. The spool mount is centered up and down on
              lower pad.

On the left pad the holes are 1 1/4” from front edge and on the right, the
holes are 1” from front edge. So much for the horse collar.

                      3. The support bracket on left side is the original heavy duty l/4” boiler
plate bracket. Cut the front ear off, it usually hangs out board. Reweld it so it faces
the block. Drill attaching holes in horse shoe and the left side is done. See picture
#2. Now on the right side we used the new thin lightweight bracket supplied with the
new mount. Cut this bracket about 2” from front end. Bolt back piece to block and
bolt front piece to horse shoe. This leaves you with a heck of a gap. Bend both ends
so that they point at each other. Fashion a piece of l/8 x 1 x 2” stock and weld over
gap. Fill in missing area on north side of bracket so it looks nice. Cut a stiffner that
matches the contour of the bracket and weld in stoutly. See picture #3. That takes
care of that. Paint heavily as it covers all your sins. The crackle finish on ours is
not necessary, in fact on ours, it was accidental.

                      4. The lower mounting bracket in our spool mount care package was beefed
up. We added an inch of stock to the lean side of bracket as shown in picture #4.

                      5. Set motor with assembled mount in car and center with your fixture.
From under car, scribe elongated holes on lower mount. Remove and drill hole
about 1/8” plus drill size radius up from bottom of scribed slot. Install 3/8” fine
bolts by welding them to lower bracket. By now you should be all done. The car
will accept either type motor mount and both can be removed and installed as in the
              past.
